If your grades aren't so great, apply to one of the less selective colleges. Assuming your grades are OK the first year, you can switch out. However, don't apply to a college you have no genuine interest in. ACES is getting more selective and I think the only reason I got in was because I had a strong interest and background in science.

I think my ACT counted quite a bit in my favor. Also, I went to a famous high school in Chicago. Really, it's a numbers game here, unfortunately. I think they have a formula for ACT/SAT and GPA.

Getting in was a breeze. The application took me like 5 minutes to do. There was a short essay, but I just wrote a little stupid paragraph...it really doesn't matter what you put for the essay as long as you've gotten good grades and a good ACT (like 30+).

It's very numeric based. If you can't get your grades to a respectable level in time, the biggest thing you can do is just keep retaking the SAT.
